This wonderful game somehow reminds me of that Game Carlsen vs Giri where Magnus sacrificed his Queen in the opening of a Sicilian. The precision and coordination of his pieces is terrifying and just amazing. His Endgame is the greatest but props to Ian as well for making the game very close. Great match and great review! Thank you! Until the next game!

Its completely insane that Fabi spots this 4:03:14 RC5 > RC2. According to Agadmator you need a depth 40 at engine before the is being viewed as winning for white, and Fabi spots this idea super fast. Genius. And on top of that it was missed in the game.

Miesiąc temu
Alexander Kononov +4

Fabi had a different idea and the position is different, the winning idea is to play nf4 after rc2, not ra2 after rc2

Chess is so much more than calculation. Fighting spirit, endurance and psychology. During the conference, Carlsen mentions that he tried to prolong the game as much as possible to tire out his opponent, so that Nepo would err at the critical moment. Squeezing water from a stone indeed. ... It takes two to make a masterpiece, and only these two titans could have created this wild and memorable battle. An honor to witness it live.

No. In the practical sense, chess is nothing but calculation now. The computers have already proven that. Computers are the best in the world precisely BECAUSE they dont give a shit about "fighting spirit, endurance, and or psychology" - just about the most accurate move. That may be where the real beauty is chess lies, in finding the most accurate move in any position. The true "artists" are now the machines. Its now just a matter of the humans not making obvious blunders that your opponents computer has already gone over.

Magnus, confident and happy with his win, until Maurice tells him about Rc2, Then you can tell he absolutely crucifies himself for it and it tarnishes his perception of the game. So much respect for magnus, that's why he's the champion and that's why he deserves to win prefect games. 8:51:15

It’s important to note how the commentators, who include a world top-10 player, keep on saying that it’s a very difficult endgame for Ian to defend, but then start putting moves on the board that immediately send the computer evaluation plummeting to a draw. Meanwhile, Carlsen’s moves slowly but surely push the computer evaluation ever higher in his favour. The point is not that this was a hard ending for Ian to defend (although it was). The point here is that Carlsen displayed an extraordinarily patient and accurate strategy to win that almost any other player in the world would have messed up. If anything shows how much better Carlsen is than any of his peers, this may well be it. Just awesome!
